Carson-Mitchell, Inc. was contracted by City Utilities of Springfield to construct the foundation for the 520’ chimney stack foundation at the new Southwest 2 power station. Over 2000 cubic yards of concrete was poured in a single day with two concrete pumps and 4 nitrogen cooling stations. Liquid Nitrogen was used to cool the concrete in order to help mitigate thermal differential cracking. Temperature sensors were used throughout the foundation to monitor temperature as the concrete cooled and cured.
